# Export to BMD

> Connect BMD and import the BuErf ZIP into BMD Vorerfassung.

For BMD, Billpal creates a ZIP file in BuErf format. You import it into BMD Vorerfassung; posting happens there.

## Connect BMD

An admin connects BMD once under **Settings > Accounting**, on the **Integrations** tab:

* **Ledger account length**: set it to the length your books use, so the chart of accounts and the export match. For example, 8400 has 4 digits and 44010 has 5.
* **Customer account and supplier account**: new customers and suppliers that Billpal creates get the next free number from there. Numbers a contact already has stay as they are.

## Export and import

Click **Export** at the top right and choose **BMD** as the format and the date range. More on the options under [Exports](/en/exports).

<Steps>
  <Step title="Unpack the ZIP">
    Unpack the ZIP on your computer.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Import Personenkonten.csv">
    Import the contacts from `Personenkonten.csv` first.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Import Buchungen.csv">
    Then import `Buchungen.csv` from the same folder. The file is UTF-8 encoded.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The lines are suggestions for BMD Vorerfassung. Check incomplete accounts and the tax treatment before you post.

## Documents left out

If Billpal can't put a document into the file, it leaves it out and tells you after the export. Open the warning to see which documents are missing and why.
