# Connect Gmail

> Connect your Gmail inbox through your Google account so Billpal imports documents from it.

You connect Gmail by signing in with Google. You don't enter a password in Billpal, and you don't need an app password. The same goes for custom-domain inboxes hosted on Google Workspace.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose Gmail">
    Go to **Settings > Email**, click **Add**, and choose **Gmail**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the start date">
    In **Connect Gmail**, use **Start date** to choose how far back Billpal imports documents. If you send your own invoices by email, also check **Also import invoices from your Sent folder**. Then click **Continue**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in with Google">
    Google opens its sign-in page. Pick the account your invoices arrive in and allow access. Billpal only gets read-only access to your inbox.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for the import">
    You're then back in Billpal. "Documents are now being imported. This may take a few minutes." means the import is running.
  </Step>
</Steps>

For the start date options and what Billpal imports from your inbox, see [Import documents from your inbox](/en/email).

## If something goes wrong

| Message | Cause | Fix |
| - | - | - |
| "We couldn't get access to your inbox. Connect again and allow the required permissions." | Not every permission was allowed on the Google page. | Connect Gmail again and leave all boxes checked on the Google page. |
| "Setup canceled. Nothing was imported." | The Google sign-in was canceled. | Start again with **Add**. |
| Google says access is blocked | On Google Workspace, your company's admin can block third-party apps. | Ask the admin to allow Billpal. Until then, you can [forward invoices](/en/forwarding). |
| **Expired** | Google ended access, for example after a password change or because Billpal was removed from your Google account. | Under **Settings > Email**, click **Reconnect** on the inbox. |
